Michael Shamiyeh

Professor, author, strategic consultant and architect in its broadest sense.

He works with organizations imagining and creating desired futures, meaning, he supports organizations in tackling complex challenges by creating a new and meaningful future (rather than fixing a problem from the past). In a design-led approach, he combines the client’s unique business experience, analytical rigor, and the output of creative collisions (the clash of multiple perspectives to reframe habitual thinking) to transform insight into impact.

Everything began with a question:
Can design, viewed as a creative-analytical activity aiming to transfer a given situation into a desired one, help organizations to sense, shape, and seize new opportunities?

Back in the mid-1990s, during his time at the Harvard University, Michael Shamiyeh believed that the designer’s mode of operation harbors a strong and even unique potential for contemporary managerial practice, in particular, to formulate new business opportunities. Since then he has been striving to combine design methods with strategic management.

His writings and conferences with internationally acclaimed experts on the issue have been well received within the business and the design community. For instance, Wallpaper listed him as “one of 101 of the world’s most exciting new architects” and global consultancies like McKinsey invited him to share his findings. In 2007, the School of Management at the University of St. Gallen became aware of his thinking and invited him to continue research in the field of corporate strategy, which led to his doctoral dissertation in management and other related endeavors.

Throughout this period, Michael gained more than 20 years of international experience in the field of architectural design and about 10 years in strategic management. He has been fortunate to tackle quite large projects with production cost up to an amount of € 140 million in total and to work with Kodak, Porsche, Siemens, and voestalpine among many other leading companies. The work he and his team have done has won awards at home and abroad, including the highly remunerated ‘Innovation Prize’ (€100,000) from the Austrian Ministry of Science in 2009, and the Gold Medal for ‘Best Invention’ from the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2010. Recently a work of him was awarded with the Green 'Good Design Award' - the oldest and the most prestigious awards program organized worldwide.

Today, Michael Shamiyeh is professor, founder, and head of the Center for Future Design (C-FD), Austria, the consistent continuation of the internationally recognized research-based Design-Organization-Media Lab (DOM) he founded in the early 2000s with a rich network to leading experts and institutions around the globe. He is also partner at the International Center for Corporate Governance (ICFCG) at the University St. Gallen, Switzerland, and Visiting Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Stanford University, USA.

Professor Shamiyeh holds degrees from the University of St. Gallen (PhD in Management), Harvard University (Postprofessional Master in Architecture), AA London (MA History and Critical Thinking), and the Technical University of Vienna (Dipl-Ing in Architecture). He has been professor for almost two decades, including three years as academic director of the Creative Process Leadership Program of the Austrian Business School in Linz. He regularly chairs or speaks at international conferences in Europe or North America and is a passionate executive educator to large corporations.

He loves to analyze the success and failure of pioneers (and their enterprises) and to synthesize and communicate findings adequately for different audiences. Recently, he directed a five-year research, film, and exhibition project on Porsche’s ten most important innovation and change leadership strategies throughout the company’s legacy—a project that was authorized by the Porsche and Piëch families (www.LearningFromPorsche.com).
